What is a Qualifying Therapist?
Therapists-in-Training go by many names. Frankly, it’s confusing. Educating yourself about the different types of therapists at this level will help you make better choices regarding your care.
A Social Work Practicum Student or Intern is typically required to complete up to 1000 hours of training in a workplace setting. Minimum hours are not typically set for the number of direct contact hours with clients. They are required to be supervised by a registered social worker.
A Qualifying Registered Psychotherapist is typically in their first three years of practice, and are completing their first 450 hours of supervised therapy practice including their student placement during their Masters Degree. They are required to work under the supervision of a registered mental health professional, and frequency of supervision may vary across practices. During this time, they are required to pass a registration exam, the CPSCP.
Individuals who are working towards registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario also go by many names.
- Practicum Students tend to be Masters or Doctoral students who are required to work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Typically, these students will receive an hour of supervision for every 8-10 hours of therapy or psychological assessment they provide. They will typically complete 300 to 600 hours of supervised therapy practice at this level.
- After completion of a Master Degree, some individuals will complete 4 years of supervised practice before entering their formal Supervised Practice year to register as Psychological Associates. Individuals during these years do not have a designated title. They are required to be supervised by a registered psychologist.
- Psychology Residents are in their final year of a Doctoral program in psychology. They are engaging in a year of full-time work (typically including 800 hours of supervised therapy and/or psychological assessment) under the supervision of a licensed psychologist to complete their doctoral studies. Typically, they have completed 300-600 hours of therapy and/or assessment as a Practicum Student.
- Psychologists or Psychological Associates in Supervised Practice have a license for supervised practice with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. They have completed all of their formal education (a Masters degree or a Doctoral degree) and are now completing a final 1500 hours of supervised practice (typically this includes at least 750 hours of supervised therapy and/or psychological assessment). Prior to this level, they have completed 1100 to 3500 hours of supervised therapy or psychological assessment. They are amongst the most highly trained mental health professionals in the country. They must also complete three sets of exams in this period: one on law and ethics in the profession of psychology (the “JEE”); one on all topics they may have studied during their 10 years of training (“the EPPP”); and an oral exam in front of a committee of psychologists (the “Orals”). They are required to be supervised by a registered psychologist.
At Transforming Emotions, our Qualifying Therapists work directly under the supervision of senior clinicians, which means they are supported and guided through every step of their practice. We require that Qualifying Therapists receive approximately one hour of supervision for every 8-10 hours of therapy they provide. This supervision ensures that every client receives high-quality, well-informed care. It also allows the Qualifying Therapist to refine their skills while keeping up-to-date with the latest therapeutic techniques, ultimately enhancing the treatment experience for clients.
“Supervision isn’t just oversight—it’s about creating the best outcomes for clients by fostering growth in therapists.”
Why Should I Choose a Qualifying Therapist?
Choosing a Qualifying Therapist has several unique advantages, especially if you are looking for affordable, high-quality care without compromising on support or professionalism.
1. Affordable Therapy Without Compromising Quality
One of the key benefits of choosing a Qualifying Therapist is the affordability. Since Qualifying Therapists are still completing their training, the cost of sessions is typically lower than that of a fully licensed therapist. At Transforming Emotions, we offer sessions with Qualifying Therapists beginning at $100 per hour, making therapy accessible to more people who need it.
Lower cost doesn’t mean lower quality. Because these therapists work under the close supervision of experienced clinicians, every client benefits from not just one therapist’s expertise, but the collective wisdom and oversight of an entire team. This dual layer of support ensures that clients receive comprehensive care that meets the highest standards.
2. Up-to-Date Therapeutic Techniques
Qualifying Therapists are fresh from extensive training programs, which means they are well-versed in the latest therapeutic techniques and evidence-based practices. They are trained in modern, effective methods to help clients navigate their mental health challenges. This up-to-date knowledge can be a real advantage when it comes to exploring different approaches that suit your unique needs.
3. Supervision from Senior Clinicians
Every Qualifying Therapist at Transforming Emotions is supervised by a senior clinician. This supervision provides an added layer of safety and support, ensuring that the therapeutic process is effective and aligned with best practices. Supervision includes case reviews at the beginning to determine whether your needs can reasonably be met by a specific qualifying therapist or whether a referral to a more experienced clinician or a more specialized program is warranted, routine review of progress in your care, ongoing feedback, and collaborative decision-making, all of which contribute to a high-quality therapeutic experience for clients.
“Supervised therapy means you get the expertise of two therapists for the price of one.”
4. Fresh Perspectives and Genuine Empathy
Qualifying Therapists bring a fresh perspective to therapy. They are passionate, empathetic, and deeply committed to helping their clients achieve their mental health goals. Their drive to make a difference, coupled with their rigorous training, results in an experience that is both supportive and effective. They approach each session with genuine care, ensuring that clients feel heard, understood, and empowered.
