The Student’s Guide to Mental Health Care: Affordable Options for Ontario Students

It’s late at night, and you’re staring at your laptop screen, trying to catch up on a mountain of coursework.

Your heart is pounding, and a feeling of overwhelm washes over you—the weight of assignments, deadlines, social pressures, and maybe even a part-time job is just too much to handle. You’ve thought about therapy before, but you always come back to the same two questions: how could you possibly afford it on a student budget? And, how can taking time out of your already packed schedule to just talk about your problems possibly help?

This struggle is all too common for students in Ontario. Mental health care is more important than ever as students work to cope with normal academic stressors alongside the impacts of global affairs on mental well-being, job prospects, and financial stability. The good news? Affordable mental health options do exist, and this guide will help you understand how to access them—because no student should have to choose between their well-being and their wallet.

Why Mental Health Care Is Crucial for Students

The challenges of student life are unique. Balancing academics, work, and social obligations can take a toll, and the pressures of meeting expectations—both your own and others—often lead to anxiety, stress, or even depression. And while the rhythm of many workplaces may include opportunities for continuous learning and personal development, students are routinely evaluated every 4-6 weeks on the acquisition of brand new knowledge bases, in ways that most workers aren’t. This constant evaluation pressure with associated grades can have real implications for future opportunities, and current mental well-being. Research shows that students are at a higher risk for mental health issues due to this balancing act. But despite the need for care, accessing mental health services can feel impossible for many students, largely due to cost and availability.

“Your mental health is just as important as your academic success. In fact, it’s the foundation that allows you to thrive in all areas of your life.”

Affordable Mental Health Care Options in Ontario

1. Accessing Free Care Through your Campus Counselling Centre.

First, know that almost all campuses offer some sort of free on-campus mental health care. Also know that models for care vary widely from campus to campus with some universities offering exclusively same day walk-in sessions, and other campuses offering ongoing stable care. Check out your school’s website to see what free counselling options are available to you.

2. Using Student Health Insurance for Therapy

Most Ontario students have access to health insurance through their post-secondary institution, which often includes mental health coverage. Understanding how to use your student health plan can make therapy far more affordable. For a more detailed guide on using your student health insurance, see How Do I Use My Student Health Insurance for Therapy?

  • Check Your Coverage: Many student plans cover all or a portion of therapy costs, and at Transforming Emotions, we can help you navigate the details of your plan. Some insurance plans offer direct billing, meaning you might only need to pay a portion upfront, or nothing at all.
  • Flexible Options: Our team offers both in-person and virtual therapy sessions, providing flexibility to meet your needs without interrupting your busy schedule. We also seek to match you to the right therapist for your needs based and we offer ongoing care so you can work with the same therapist week after week.

“Don’t let confusion about insurance be a barrier—understanding your benefits can make therapy an affordable option.”

3. Qualifying Therapists: High-Quality Care at a Lower Cost

One of the most accessible ways for students to receive affordable therapy is through working with Qualifying Therapists. These are mental health professionals in the final stages of their training, who provide services under the supervision of experienced clinicians. At Transforming Emotions, we offer sessions with Qualifying Therapists starting at just $100 per hour—a rate that’s significantly more affordable than standard therapy costs. To understand more about what makes Qualifying Therapists a great option, check out What is a Qualifying Therapist and Why Should I Choose One?

  • Excellence in Supervision: Each Qualifying Therapist is closely supervised by a senior clinician, ensuring you receive high-quality care that is continuously reviewed and guided by therapists with years of experience in both providing therapy, and in teaching it.
  • Fresh Perspectives: Qualifying Therapists are trained in the latest techniques and bring a fresh, empathetic approach to each session—ideal for students looking for relatable and understanding care.

4. Sliding Scale Rates for Students in Need

For students with some capacity to pay, but who are facing financial constraints, sliding scale rates are another way to make therapy more accessible. This means that therapy costs are adjusted based on your income, ensuring that even those without extensive insurance coverage can still afford to get the help they need. If you’re interested in how sliding scale therapy works, visit How Can I Access Sliding Scale Therapy at Transforming Emotions?

  • Accessible Pricing: At Transforming Emotions, we believe mental health care should be accessible to everyone. We offer sliding scale options for students, helping to bridge the gap when financial resources are limited.
  • No Compromise on Quality: Our sliding scale services are offered by both Qualifying Therapists and senior therapists, meaning you receive high-quality care no matter your financial situation.
  • A Focus on Equitable Care: If you can afford to pay a little bit out of pocket, doing so helps us to provide the greatest fee reductions to those in the greatest need. Those who can pay a little pay a little. Those who can pay full fee, pay full fee. Those who can not afford to pay out of pocket at all, have space in counsellors’ rosters to be seen via our accessible care model. This is a great way to directly contribute to helping everyone access the care they need.

How “Just Talking” Can Actually Help

You’re a busy student, already juggling term work, exam prep, possibly labs or practicum placements, not to mention paid work, family responsibilities, showing up with and for friends and preparing for the holidays. How could taking time out of your schedule to talk possible help? Great question!

First, there is no such thing as ‘just talking.’ As you sit down and speak to a therapist many things are happening simultaneously. These include:

  • Slowing down and organizing your stresses and your solultions: When we take time to articulate what is troubling us, we often begin to find clarity as we organize our thoughts, recognize patterns, and make meaning of actions and reactions in our lives. The problem: we seldom take time to do this on our own. Before calling a therapist, you can try taking a moment to write a long list of all the things that are stressing you out. Identify those that have a due date and write the due date out. Highlight in blue those things you have no control over. Highlight in yellow those things you do have control over. Take some time to order the due dates and the yellow items from most important to least important. Develop a plan to take care of all things you have control over. For those on your blue list, you may wish to seek emotional support and strategies for leaning into radical acceptance (or help to see how you may in fact have more capacity for control than you thought you had in the first place).
  • Access to Specialized Training in Human Experience: Therapists are not experts in your life. You are. But, therapists do have specialized training in understanding common patterns of thinking, behaving, and feeling that many humans get stuck in…and ways to get unstuck. A trained therapist will listen to your story and will be able to organize what you say in meaningful ways to identify ways out of common stuck points. They also have a lot of information about human stress responses and what variables can help to reduce stress versus exacerbating it.
  • Differentiating Stress from Mental Health Concerns: Therapists are trained to see the pattern behind the content. What does this mean? Three different students may come in talking about exam stress. The way in which they talk – their vocal tone, posture, the meaning they make of their experience – can suggest to a therapist that, in addition to exam stress, a student may be struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma responses, undiagnosed attention or learning issues, the impact of unresolved grief, or family dynamics that are magnifying normal stresses. A therapist is trained to hear the issues underlying the issues.
  • Sitting with a Therapist Feels Different: In our culture, very few individuals understand how to really listen, and how to do so without judgement, without immediately trying to apply fixes that may not work, or without becoming upset themselves. For most clients, as they are really heard and have space for their own emotions to unfold, something happens. They experience a new feeling – perhaps one of relief, of hope, of self-compassion, of anger at unfair circumstances. Feeling something new, in addition to learning something new, is a big part of beginning to change stuck response patterns.
